Waste & Recycling Program Improvements
Background
To reduce our
environmental impact and extend the life of our
landfill, Mayor Ralph Becker and the Salt Lake
City Council have set a goal to divert 50% of the
waste stream by 2015. This fall, we'll start
implementing chages to our waste collection
services in order to meet this goal.
Through curbside recycling,
voluntary yard waste, composting leaves, Christmas trees, and
bulky green waste collected through Neighborhood cleanup, our
residents have achieved a diversion and recycling rate of 19%.
Through these planned
improvements, we can:

Increase
recycling rate from 19% to 42% by 2015

Produce
approximately 20,000 cubic yards of compost
and mulch products from material collected
over the next year. (Call the landfill at

compost and mulch products.)

Eliminate
almost 50,000 pounds of plastic leaf bag waste
annually
