Salt Lake City residents invited to cemetery master plan open house

Salt Lake City invites residents to an open house for the Salt Lake City Cemetery Master Plan on Tuesday, June 14, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the basement of the Salt Lake City Main Public Library, Conference Room B (210 East 400 South).

Input from residents will help the project team understand wants, needs, priorities, and concerns to help shape the direction of the master plan.

“The Salt Lake City Cemetery is a treasured open space for our community, and with burials dating back to 1847, it is a vital link to the city’s history,” said Cemetery Sexton Mark Smith. “This master plan will combine community feedback with national best practices to enhance the cemetery’s historic, natural, and recreational assets.”

The city has recently begun work to develop a master plan for the cemetery that will meet its current and future needs, such as maintenance, management, funding, restoration and preservation. The plan will incorporate national best practices as well as local input to ensure that it reflects the needs and preferences of the community.

The master plan project consists of three phases – 1) research and analysis, 2) concept alternatives and 3) plan development. During the second phase – concept alternatives – the project team will use the research findings to develop preliminary master plan solutions. The third phase – plan development – will result in a final draft of the cemetery master plan to be released in early 2017. Public opinion will also be solicited after each of these phases.
