Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City to host a “Missing Middle Housing” discussion

The Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City (RDA) invites the public to the educational session, “Missing Middle Housing: Responding to the Demand for Walkable Urban Living” on Wednesday, April 20 at 5:30 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Main Library auditorium, 210 E. 400 South.

Urban architect Dan Parolek will address the need for more diverse and affordable housing options, including duplexes, fourplexes, and bungalow courts. The focus will be on creating more walkable communities that support local retail businesses and public transit options.

“As Salt Lake City continues to grow and thrive, we must keep up with residents’ housing needs and desires. This discussion is a great way to continue the conversation about how the city and development community can work together in creating truly affordable housing and more dynamic neighborhoods,” said Mayor Jackie Biskupski.

“The national trend of more people wanting to live in an urban and walkable environment definitely hits close to home,” said RDA Board Chair and Salt Lake City Councilwoman Lisa Adams. “One of the main functions of the RDA is to create housing opportunities within Salt Lake City, so we are pleased to provide a forum where the housing gap issue can be examined and discussed.”

Session attendees will see examples of multi-unit and clustered housing types that are compatible in scale with single-family homes, and learn how this type of housing can foster more walkable urban living, both nationally and within Salt Lake City, specifically.

Dan Parolek is a principal of Opticos Design of Berkeley, Calif. He has previously presented at the Congress for New Urbanism and the American Planning Association Conference, and has been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and USA Today.
