Municipal, Regional and State Agencies Launch Year of the Bike

SALT LAKE CITY – Salt Lake City joins founding partners Salt Lake County, University of Utah, Utah Department of Transportation, Utah Transit Authority and Wasatch Front Regional Council in officially launching the Year of the Bike at a media event on Friday, Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m. near the east entrance of the Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State Street.

This collaborative, regional effort is aimed at highlighting a multitude of bicycle-related projects and outreach efforts throughout the year, including educating residents on safe, responsible cycling habits; celebrating new additions to bicycle infrastructure; promoting bicycling as a healthy and environmentally friendly commuting option and much more.

“This is a great way to increase public education around the many benefits of bicycling, including the benefits to drivers,” said Salt Lake City Transportation Director Robin Hutcheson.

Dozens of events have been added to the Year of the Bike Event Calendar, including:

    •       GREENbike, SLC Bike Share program debut, April
    •       Utah Bike Summit, April
    •       Open Streets Salt Lake City, May
    •       UTA Bike Bonanza, May
    •       Road Respect Bicycle Tour, June
    •       New bikeway openings, June/July
