City to Host Collaborative Solutions Press Event

SALT LAKE CITY – Mayor Ralph Becker, Police Chief Chris Burbank, Downtown Alliance, area social service providers and others will outline the collaborative and holistic approach the City is taking to address unwanted activity in the Rio Grande area at a media event on Monday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. on the west side of the Rio Grande Depot at 300 South and 500 West.

While work to address issues related to homelessness is continuing to find success, there are both seasonal and cyclical reasons that have nurtured a criminal element into the same areas that a significant portion of the City’s homeless population frequents in the pursuit of housing, health and food services.

“There is no single solution to these challenges that are a part of every urban environment,” said Mayor Becker. “The most effective and appropriate approach is one that is collaborative in nature and focused on root causes. Connecting residents in need with services and a path to permanent housing is the base from which we work, while also simultaneously addressing those who prey on this vulnerable population.”

Work currently underway or planned includes changes to the 500 West median to reduce misuse of the property, a neighborhood clean team performing frequent and regular cleanup in the area, installation of portable restrooms, an ambassador program and focused law enforcement efforts.

“Buying or selling drugs will not be tolerated in Salt Lake City,” said Chief Burbank. “And be warned,” he added, “you may be conducting your illegal business with an undercover cop. We’re watching and waiting.”
