City Appoints New Community and Economic Development Leader

SALT LAKE CITY – Mayor Ralph Becker is pleased to announce the appointment of Eric Shaw to the position of Salt Lake City Director of Community and Economic Development.

Most recently Shaw served as Vice President of Programs and Policy at Foundation for Louisiana where he led all of the agency’s programmatic initiatives, including grantmaking, advocacy support and policy work on issues of civic engagement, affordable housing, small minority business development and community wealth building.  He led the foundation’s creation of the Citizens’ Guide to Land Use and Citizens’ Guide to Urban Design, resources now being used by communities and citizen groups throughout the country to understand principles of planning and urban design.

Previous to joining the foundation, Shaw served as Director of Community Planning for the Louisiana Office of Community Development Disaster Recovery Unit. During his term as director, he cultivated partnerships with local planning agencies, managed a $10 million grant program dedicated to community resiliency and supported recovery programs for more than 15 parishes in northern and central Louisiana.

“The leadership position in our Community and Economic Development Department attracted a large number of highly qualified and experienced applicants,” said Mayor Ralph Becker. “Even among a group of outstanding candidates, Eric’s education, professional background and record of innovation and planning vision were distinctive and outstanding.”

Shaw has also worked in economic development and planning positions in Silicon Valley, Miami and Washington D.C.

Shaw earned an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and a master’s degree in urban planning from Harvard University School of Design.

In his time away from work, Shaw enjoys traveling and is a self-described “foodie.”
