We promote and enforce minimum requirements to safeguard the public health safety and public welfare of the built environment in Salt Lake City. Our division is made up of three sections - Building Code Review, Zoning Review and Inspections. The Building Code Review and Zoning Review sections review plans to conform to the Salt Lake City Zoning Ordinance and the International Code Council, with state amendments. The Inspections section oversees all on-going projects in the city, inspects business license applications and makes fire and life-safety inspections on buildings that have been damaged by fire or accidents.

The Salt Lake City Building Services Department is dedicated to keeping pace with new technologies as they become available. In 2008, we introduced ProjectDox electronic plan review software into our system. Through the past seven years, this program has become increasingly popular with our customers and staff and is now our preferred method for taking a project from upload to permit issuance. Voluntarily, we now have at least 50% of our customers using this method of interacting with us in the process of getting plans reviewed and permits issued. Because of the success that we have experienced with this system, we are happy to remind you of our new policy effective Monday, July 6th 2015; all new commercial and new residential buildings (excluding additions, remodels/tenant finishes) that are submitted to the Salt Lake City Building Services Department for review and permit, will be required to be submitted through ProjectDox. Location and Hours of Operation
The permits office is located at 451 South State Street Room 215, Salt Lake City. This is the City and County Building located between 400 and 500 South and between State Street and 200 East. You will find parking on State Street, 200 East and limited parking on 500 South. There is also short term, 30 minute parking in the circle on 200 East. Additionally there is parking under the Library. The entrance is on 400 South between 200 and 300 East. Our hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm and Wednesday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.
