Interesting Info:

Summer Fire Danger

Wildfire can wreak destruction of property and endanger lives.

It can also have enormous impacts on the forest, wildlife, fisheries and water supply due to loss of vegetation, erosion, stream sedimentation, and pollutant transport.

A burnt forest doesn't even look nice!

City Watershed Fire Restrictions

The second largest landowner in the Wasatch Front is Salt Lake City Public Utilities. Fire restrictions on City Watershed lands are often more restrictive than the County and Forest Service. Areas with special City Watershed Management fire restrictions include City Creek Canyon, Parleys, Dell and Lambs Canyons, including the Little Dell Recreation Area and Affleck Park Campground.

In addition to general Forest and County restrictions, the following Salt Lake City Watershed fire restrictions apply to these areas:

  • Fireworks are prohibited.
  • Open fires are prohibited. This includes restrictions on fires in developed fire pits. Natural gas or propane stoves are ok.
  • Smoking is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle.

General Watershed Fire Restrictions

In the Wasatch National Forest, the U.S. Forest Service maintains control and issues "special orders" on fire restrictions on Forest lands. Private land is regulated by Salt Lake County Wildland Fire regulations.

These agencies are now coordinating fire restrictions, which can be viewed at www.utahfireinfo.gov.

Violators of federal fire restrictions are punishable up to $5,000 fine and/or imprisonment up to 6 months. Individuals who start wildfires may be held liable for part or all of the firefighting expense.
