Utah Clean Fuel Special Group License Plate

If you have a Utah Clean Fuel special group license plate displayed on your vehicle you can park for free at Salt Lake City parking meters - your special license plate acts as your parking permit. Please note that you are still required to comply with posted time limits and other parking restrictions. This special license plate also allows unrestricted access to the carpool lanes on I-15.

This special group license plate is available for a one-time fee of $15 from the Utah Department of Motor Vehicles to owners of vehicles powered by a “clean fuel”. A “clean fuel” is defined by state code section 19-1-402 as:

  1. Propane,
  2. Natural gas,
  3. Electricity,
  4. Other fuel the Air Quality Board determines to be at least as effective in reducing air pollution as propane, natural gas or electricity, or
  5. Other fuel that meets the clean-fuel vehicles standards in the federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.

The owner of a vehicle powered by a "clean fuel" is required to annually pay a clean special fuel tax by purchasing a clean special fuel certificate from the Utah State Tax Commission. The fee for this certificate is $82 if your vehicle weight is 26,000 pounds or less, or $126 if the vehicle weight is over 26,000 pounds.
