Community Gardening and Urban Farming

Salt Lake City has taken measures to increase food production
locally through community gardens and urban farming. It also
has pledged full support of Salt Lake County’s initiative to
increase urban farming along the Wasatch Front.
Some new developments include:
-
The City now allows fowl
raising on privately owned land.
-
The City’s Redevelopment
Agency, in partnership with Wasatch Community Gardens, and
the people of the West Temple Gateway community have installed the People’s Portable Garden at 877
South 200 West.
-
The City works directly
with local non-profits such as Wasatch Community
Gardens and community members to develop gardens
within City limits. Wasatch Community Gardens is a
community-based nonprofit that has served the Salt Lake
County community for over 20 years. Their mission is to empower
people of all ages and incomes to grow and eat healthy,
organic, local food.
-
The City helped purchase
the land and a conservation easement to protect the 4th E
Communtiy Garden (553 South 400 East).
-
The City has partnered with
Master Gardeners to develop plans to create a demonstration garden located
at approximately 1800 South 700 East.
-
The City is participating
on Salt Lake County's Urban Farming Steering Committee to
support their countywide effort to expand urban farming
opportunities.
