Salt Lake City and County Building to undergo stone repair and seismic upgrades

Salt Lake City will begin a three-year project to restore the building’s stone facade, repair windows, and perform a seismic upgrade of the historic building located at 451 South State Street. Big-D Construction will begin the work on June 6, 2016, with a scheduled completion date of Fall 2018. The building will continue to operate as Salt Lake City Hall and remain open to the public throughout the work.

The building, which was constructed in 1894, has not had significant exterior work of this nature conducted since the late 1980’s. In 2014, the City funded projects that would ensure the building could withstand larger seismic events than originally designed and to also repair, preserve, and where needed, replace some of the exterior Kyune sandstone.

The three-year project will begin with stone restoration work on the building’s tower, requiring scaffolding to be in place throughout this summer and fall. Seismic work, consisting of installing concrete beams in the foundation area, will also commence this summer and be completed by mid-April 2017. Work on the lower portions of the building will take place during the Summer-Fall of 2017 and 2018.

“This is one of the most iconic buildings in Salt Lake City and holds a special place in the history of the State of Utah and the Capital City,” said Mayor Jackie Biskupski on the project. “These key projects are essential to maintaining the building to a level that is consistent with its historic significance and to allow for continued use as Salt Lake’s City center of government well into the future.”

Salt Lake City and Big-D Construction will host a “Meet the Contractor” informational open house event on June 1st from 11:00am – 1:00pm in Room 315 at the City and County Building. The public is welcome to attend.
