Becoming a candidate

 

Requirements for a Council Member candidate 

  • Must be a registered voter
  • Must be a resident of Salt Lake City and must have resided in the district you want to represent within 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the date of the election.
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age or older.

Requirements for a Mayoral candidate

  • Must be a registered voter
  • Must be a resident of Salt Lake City and have resided within Salt Lake City boundaries for 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the date of the election.
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age or older.

Other requirements for all candidates

  • Must open a personal campaign committee before receiving any political contributions or spending any money on political expenditures.

Declarations of Candidacy

Declarations are made in person at the City Recorder's Office at 451 South State St , Room 415 during office hours from July 1 to July 15 of any odd numbered year.

Council member candidate declaration

  • Complete a declaration of candidacy form
  • Must pay a fee of $75, OR submit a nominating petition signed by 75 residents of the district you seek to represent.

Mayoral candidate declaration

  • Complete a declaration of candidacy form
  • Must pay a fee of $315, OR submit a nominating petition signed by 45 residents of each council district, for a total of 315 residents.

October 15, 2009 (Candidates unsuccessful in Primary Election)
(Reporting Date: October 15, 2009)

October 23, 2009 (General Election Candidates)
(Reporting Date: October 20, 2009)

December 3, 2009 (all General Election candidates)
(Reporting Date: December 3, 2009)

February 15 of any year (for any candidate with an "open" personal campaign committee)
