The Elimination of
Public Way Accessibility Barriers
Salt Lake City has a strong
commitment to the elimination of accessibility barriers in the public
way. All public way construction projects including permit work,
subdivisions, private development, deteriorated concrete replacement, and
capital improvements must follow the standards established in the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A
transition plan has been developed that identifies accessibility
ramp construction needs and presents a prioritized program of
resolution.
Condition and
Strategy Statement
There are approximately 15,000 possible accessibility ramp
construction locations in Salt Lake City. Ramps have been
constructed at approximately 60% of these locations. It will cost
about $12,000,000 to install the remaining ramps.
Since funding to install all the
needed ramps is not immediately available, determination of priority
locations for the expenditure of City funds is based on specific criteria
including pedestrian traffic volume, bus routes, school routes, public
buildings, commercial outlets, citizen requests, and coordination with
special needs groups. The citywide accessibility ramp inventory in
conjunction with defined prioritization criteria provides a powerful
tool for evaluating needs and planning future ramp construction
projects.
