Any construction activity in the
public way requires a permit from the Engineering Division of
Salt Lake City Public Services. Work in the public way includes
replacement or new construction of streets, sidewalks, curb and
gutter, drive approaches, and utility excavations. Landscaping
does not require a public way permit, unless machinery is
required to move material.
Requirements for Obtaining A
Permit

All contractors applying for a public way permit must
provide a copy of their Utah State contractor's license, post a bond for
a minimum of $15,000 (for excavation only), and provide a current certificate of liability
insurance including workers compensation.

A copy of Salt Lake City Engineering
Division's "Insurance, Bonding, and License Information Packet".

Property owners performing work in the public way
adjacent to their property must obtain a public way permit and provide
proof of homeowner's insurance with limited liability coverage. License
and bonding documentation is not applicable.

A set of plans must be submitted with the permit
application. Depending on the extent of work, approval may be
required from the following city departments:

Applications must include the name, address, and phone
number of the contractor, homeowner, or permit applicant; a scope of
work statement, and a construction schedule including proposed start and
completion dates.

A permit fee may be imposed. Fees for public way
permits vary according to the type of work and the time of year.

All public way restoration must be accomplished in
accordance with City Engineering regulations, standard plans and
specifications, and the Traffic Barricade Manual.

permit (no fee) is required from the city's Transportation Department:
