Helpful snow removal information
We Need Your Help to Help Us Serve You Better and to Make Roadways
and Sidewalks Passable.
Parking
-
When possible, park vehicles off
the streets during a storm and for up to 36 hours after the
storm abates.
-
You must move your vehicle every
48 hours from where it is parked. See ordinance 12.56.520 (Using
Streets For Storage Prohibited).
-
If you must park on the street,
try to coordinate with your neighbors and alternately park on
the same side of the street. Also, do not park directly opposite
another vehicle on the other side of the street, to avoid a
"bottle neck".
-
Avoid leaving windows open on your
vehicles, plows going by may put snow and ice into the open
window.
-
Remove snow from around your
vehicle after every storm.
Clearing Your Property of Snow
-
When you shovel driveways, pile
the snow to the right hand side of your driveway when facing the
street, so when the street is plowed all the snow is not pushed
back into your driveway.
-
Do not snow blow or shovel the
snow into the street, it is against City ordinance 14.20.080
(Obstructing Right of Way with Snow Prohibited) and is a traffic
safety hazard.
-
Shovel the entire sidewalk
adjacent to your property within 24 hours from the end of
precipitation. This is also required by City Ordinance 14.20.070
(Snow to be Removed From Sidewalks).
-
If your property includes a
crosswalk or an ADA ramp, please keep it clear of snow.
-
Remove snow from around fire
hydrants and bus benches on your property.
-
Help others, volunteer your time
and equipment to assist the elderly or handicapped by contacting
your local church or the Community Service Council at 978-2452,
help your neighbor or friend, help others in need. We all need a
little assistance once in a while.
Driving
-
Please do not pull out in front
of, or attempt to pass a snow plow.
-
Stay at least 200 feet away from
plows at all times.
-
Put snow tires on your vehicles
before the snow flies.
-
It is unsafe to be walking or
riding on the street in anything which is not enclosed when
plowing is in progress.
Plow Priorities
Arterial, emergency, and main routes
are plowed first in a storm. Please be patient during large storms.
If you have questions or concerns please contact the customer
service office at 535-6999. Check out our plow
Priorities Map.
The Salt Lake City Snow Crews are
dedicated to clearing the streets of snow and ice. They work 24
hours a day, 7 days a week nonstop when the snow flies to ensure the
safety of the traveling public, to provide access to businesses so
that commerce is as uninterrupted as possible, to open emergency
routes to hospitals, fire stations, etc., to help school buses
arrive on time and safely, to allow access to parking meters, for
refuse collection services to be continued, and to allow all of us
the freedom to accomplish many other daily activities.
When the snow flies in Utah it means opportunities for great
recreational activities, beautiful vistas. It also brings many
challenges and frustrations with snow covered streets, windrows at
the end of driveways and shoveling to be done. The snow fighters do
their best for you but they are asking for your help so they can
better serve you.
