Tree Damage

Whose Responsibility Is It?

City Responsibility
Property Owner Responsibility
Dispose of Waste
City and County Health Regulations

Salt Lake City, Forestry Division maintains public trees which are located on the park strip.  The park strip is the property between the sidewalk and the street.  Forestry is currently responding to calls regarding public trees.  If you have woody waste debris from trees or shrubs growing on your property (anywhere not on the park strip), you are responsible to dispose of the limbs.

Snowstorm sometimes cause breakage of trees on public and private property throughout the city and valley.  Some of the most vulnerable species included plums, maples and littleleaf lindens.

Many of the broken trees are excellent candidates for restorative pruning.   Arborist crews will be providing this service in the weeks and months ahead for trees located on the park strip within Salt Lake City limits

If there is a public property tree on the park strip in your neighborhood you would like inspected for service or condition, please call the forestry division at 972-7818.  Service requests may also be made here.

Forestry has been inundated with calls regarding private trees. These calls are taking time away from the needs of trees on public property. Foresters are trained specialists on trees and are able to differentiate easily between species. Please understand trees not growing on the park strip are the owners responsibility. Forestry will not remove debris from private trees.  If they respond to a call regarding which turns out to be a private tree, they will leave it with a notice to owner to remove pile within one week.

Trees on Private Property                             Resident Responsibility

Any debris from trees on your property (from the sidewalk to the home and backyard), you are responsible to dispose of  We appreciate your compliance of City and County regulations.

How to Dispose of Debris
We suggest taking woody waste to the Salt Lake Valley Landfill where it will be recycled into compost.
If you do not have the ability to haul the debris to the landfill we suggest the following:
  1. Place debris in your garbage can.  Please make sure the garbage can lid shuts.  If the pile is larger than the can, place small amounts in each week until the pile is gone.  Do not store the pile on the park strip or the road.
  2. Contact a private business and pay to have it removed.  Businesses can be found in the Yellow Pages phonebook under "Garbage & Rubbish collection" or "Tree Service".
  3. Store the debris properly in your yard until your annual Neighborhood Cleanup date.
County and City Health Regulations
Salt Lake City follows County Regulation General Sanitation 7.0.52 which describes, waste not removed by government entity is the responsibility of the owner or occupant.

In addition to the web site, taking phone calls, and media information, Salt Lake City is trying to inform people of the regulations by delivering a non compliance flyer to residence in violation.  However, this is not required by law and may be enforced without warning.
