Mayor Joins State, Downtown Business Reps to Announce New Market

SALT LAKE CITY – Mayor Ralph Becker will join Utah Department of Heritage and Arts Executive Director Julie Fisher and representatives of Downtown Alliance to announce an exciting advancement toward a year-round Downtown Farmers Market on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. on the east side of the Rio Grande Depot, 300 S. Rio Grande Street.

In a collaborative effort involving City and state leaders and the Downtown Alliance, a winter farmers market concept will return to downtown Salt Lake City next month. During the 2012-13 winter season, monthly “pop-up” markets launched as a pre-cursor to this upcoming market, which is the next step towards a year-round public market.

The year-round public market has long been a priority for Mayor Becker and the Downtown Alliance and is called for in the 2006 “Downtown Rising” visioning document. The long-range plan aims to redevelop and revitalize the Rio Grande neighborhood while continuing to build economic support of Utah ranchers, farmers and other small businesses by leveraging the success of the Downtown Farmers Market.
