Local Businesses Join Non-Profit Group, Dance Troupes for Air Quality Fundraiser

SALT LAKE CITY – Poor air quality is one of the biggest issues facing residents of the Salt Lake Valley. In just the first two months of 2014 alone, pollution measurements along the Wasatch Front exceeded EPA standards by a factor of 15. This means that for more than two weeks the region, and especially its most vulnerable populations, was subjected to levels of air pollution deemed to be unsafe and unhealthy.

In an effort to raise awareness of this growing issue, Landis Salon will host Light As Air, a community celebration and fashion show that will bring together positive and like-minded people who seek to do something about air quality in the region.

"We have a unique topography and problem here, but we also have an opportunity to be leaders in air quality solutions for the nation," said event organizer Corigan Kushma.

Western Resource Advocates, a regional conservation nonprofit, has been at the forefront of setting healthy air quality standards for the state, and all proceeds raised will go directly to the Clean Air Utah division, which serves to regulate and protect air quality.

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker has made the work to address air quality his top priority.

"This effort by Western Resource Advocates with the support of Landis Salon and these great local dance organizations is absolutely wonderful," said Mayor Becker. "Our ongoing work at Salt Lake City to address this problem is greatly bolstered by grassroots, bottom-up efforts by our community, like the Light As Air event. It is only through working together that we will make advancements against the biggest issue facing our City and the entire Salt Lake Valley–our dangerously poor air quality."

Hosted at the Jeanne Wagner Theater on Sunday, November 2, guests will have the opportunity to purchase general admission tickets or a higher tier, complete with VIP dinner and reception. A cocktail hour with a silent auction and raffle will follow, and all attendees will enjoy performances from some of the state's best dancers and dance groups, including Ballet West, Ryrie Woodbury, Transfusion Hype, NOW International Dance, Underground Dance Crew, and Park City Dance Academy, among others.
