Gallivan Opens Excellence Outdoor Series with Big Band Swing
Monthly concerts showcase blockbuster local talent
 
SALT LAKE CITY – The community is invited to spend an evening under the stars and swing to the sounds of Caleb Chapman and the Crescent Super Band on Friday, May 11, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. at the Gallivan Center, 239 S. Main Street. The concert is the first outdoor show of this year’s Excellence in the Community concert series.
 
Celebrating local and diverse talent, the Excellence in the Community Foundation and the Gallivan Center  have partnered to present  a wide variety of Utah’s top local acts every month in Salt Lake City’s cultural core. Concerts range from classical and jazz to bossa nova, Mexican, Polynesian and folk music.
 
May’s performance features award-winning musician, director and band leader Caleb Chapman, who will bring two celebrated big bands – the Crescent Super Band and the Little Big Band – to the outdoor stage of the Gallivan Center.  Chapman’s Hooligans Brass Band is scheduled for a pre-show march around the plaza.
 
“Utah is fortunate to claim some of the most talented and gifted musicians in the country,” said Mayor Ralph Becker. “Excellence in the Community concerts provide residents and visitors an opportunity to gather together in a vibrant downtown setting and experience the excitement of accomplished local artists.”

The public is welcome to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the Gallivan Center. There is no charge for the concert.

The Gallivan Center is located in downtown Salt Lake City and can easily be accessed via TRAX, just east of the Gallivan Center stop on Main Street. North end parking can be accessed between State and Main Streets at 200 South, and south parking can be accessed just south of the Marriott Hotel.
