When someone calls 911 asking for help, they are asked a series of questions from our protocols. These questions are asked to help ensure we're sending the most appropriate response, and determine if lifesaving instructions should be given over the phone, prior to the arrival of fire fighters. |
| Sometimes, 911 callers are asked to stay on the line until fire fighters arrive. This is occasionally appropriate so that fire crews can receive updates about what's happening on scene prior to their arrival. |

Salt Lake City Fire Dispatch uses sophisticated communications & computer aided dispatch technology for the management & triage of calls that occur simultaneously. Calls are assigned a code based upon the questions that are asked, which is used to designate severity. Basic Life Support calls, (codes A & B), are typically minor in nature. Advanced Life Support calls, (codes C, D, & E), are typically life-threatening situations, which will commonly elicit a maximum response from fire crews. |
