Over
the past six months the Salt Lake City Fire Department has involved
ninety department members in developing a strategic plan. With the
assistance of Dr. Robert Simmons of the University of Phoenix, a
core group of participants met to discuss department values, key
results areas, and priorities for improving fire services. This
document is a summary of the input of department members in developing
that plan.
This
strategic plan has been developed with heavy involvement from all
levels of the department. It is intended to reflect the entire department's
input and values. Its implementation will be based upon the full
involvement of employees. This plan is as much a reflection of the
departments philosophy and values as its goals. It reflects the
department's commitment to the process of working together, recognizing
our dependence on each department member.
In
developing this plan, nine values were identified as the basis for
achieving a better department. Those values include the following:

Involvement
of the entire department enables everyone to contribute better
ways to accomplish goals with the resources which are available.

We
depend upon one another and must work together to achieve effective

Each
department member retains responsibility for our success and
for developing the skills required to implement improvements
in serving the public. |

Making |
Decisions
will be delegated to those responsible for achieving results
and will be made based upon the values of efficiency and effectiveness
in meeting community needs. |

Development |
An
investment in the education and professional development of
all employees is critical to improving decision quality. |
| Creativity |
Developing
better ways to accomplish department goals requires the ability
to apply new ideas and measure their potential benefits. |
| Accountability |
All
employees are committed to the success of the department and
for improving service to the community. |
| Advancement |
Opportunities
for promotion will be based upon the demonstrated ability to
achieve team goals in the position being filled. |
| Service |
Our
efforts are based upon the needs of the residents, business
owners and visitors who live in, work in or visit our city.

These
values form the foundation for the Salt Lake City Fire Department's
strategic plan. They guide the actions of employees at all levels
of the department. Within the framework of these values, the fire
department is committed to providing residents, business owners,
and visitors with fire and emergency services which protect lives
and property. |
