After ONE year of completed service, a firefighter can compete for promotion to:
Paramedic Specialist
Hazardous Material Technician Specialist
Airport Rescue Firefighter (ARFF)
Heavy Rescue Specialist
Swift Water Rescue Specialist
Inspector Specialist
Public Education Specialist

Instructor Specialist

Engineer Specialist
Fire/Arson Investigator Specialist
After TEN years of continuous service a firefighter can compete for:
Firefighter Captain

If a firefighter has an associate degree (or higher degree) from an accredited college or university, he or she may test for promotion after completion of nine (9) years of service as a firefighter with the Fire Department.

After FIFTEEN years of minimum service and TWO years of service as a Captain a firefighter can compete for:
Battalion Chief

If the Captain has an associate degree from an accredited college or university, he or she may test for promotion after completion of fourteen (14) years of service as a firefighter with the Fire Department.

If the Captain has a bachelors degree (or higher degree) from an accredited college or university, he or she may test for promotion after completion of thirteen (13) years of service as a firefighter with the Fire Department.
