Salt Lake City
announces the 2007/2008 program for the acquisition of open space.
Salt Lake City created the procedure for granting funds for
the acquisition of land, conservation easements, development rights,
and other means of preserving open space under the Open Space Lands
Program in 2006.
The mission of
the Salt Lake City Open Space Lands Program is to preserve and
enhance the quality of life throughout Salt Lake City. The City’s
Open Space Advisory Board facilitates the acquisition, management,
promotion, preservation, protection and enhancement of open space
land.
Open Space Land
is defined by ordinance as a parcel of land in a predominantly open
and undeveloped condition that is suitable for 1) natural areas 2)
wildlife habitat 3) important wetland or watershed lands 4) greenway
or stream corridors 5) small neighborhood parks designed primarily
for non-organized, non-supervised activities and 6) trails and paths
for non-motorized recreational activities.
This announcement initiates the 2nd
round of funding opportunities made available by the City. $4.7
million of open space funds are available under a dollar for dollar
match requirement.
The first round of open space funding
resulted in the City purchasing 12.7 acres of property near the H
rock on the foothills of the east bench.
