Public Utilities Wins State CIO Award

On the 1^st of May, the State’s Central Information Office or CIO honored Public Utilities by awarding them their 2002 CIO Award for Outstanding Local e-Government Online Application for the Public Utilities e-Government application “Online Payment of Water Bills”. Jim Lewis and Sybilla Dalton were on hand from Public Utilities and Bill Haight represented the team from IMS. Gov. Mike Leavitt presented the award. Salt Lake City was the only municipality to receive the award this year.

The online application has become a key part of the Public Utilities web site. Our site allows citizens and businesses connected to the City water and sewer systems to view their account information, including historical bill data with a graphical presentation of water usage over the last thirteen months, and pay their bill on-line via a credit card. The system first came on line in April of last year and has enjoyed increasing popularity with Public Utilities customers. More than $125,000 is processed though the website each month resulting in a significant savings in time and labor both for the customer and for Public Utilities. Our site was the first local government website in Utah to provide this service to the public. Future plans for the site include adding more functionality that will allow customers to do as many things as possible in regards to their accounts, such as requesting additional trash cans, signing up for new service, and requesting a final read to close the account.

The official proclamation stated the following:

Whereas, professionals from the Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities have an online application for citizens to pay their water bills; and

Whereas, online self-service for customers are time-saving and provide 24X7 availability; and

Whereas, Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities provides current information and an easy to understand chart comparing the customer’s monthly water consumption;

Now, Therefore, I Michael O. Leavitt, Governor of the state of Utah, do hereby award the Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities for Outstanding Local E-Government Online Application

Jim Lewis, Sybilla Dalton, and Trish Capener from Public Utilities and Randy Buckley, Bill Haight, and Chi Nguyen from IMS were the team leaders that participated in developing the application along with the help of numerous people both at Public Utilities and IMS.
