City Council News Advisory
The Salt Lake City Council will hold its second public meeting on the future of Main Street and downtown Thursday, April 25. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Room 326 of the City & County Building, 451 South State Street.
“The Council looks forward to continuing to work with the Mayor as we identify potential policies and initiatives to enhance the downtown,” Council Chair David L. Buhler said.
The City Council has mailed letters to downtown property owners, business owners and residents inviting them to submit written comments or speak at Thursday’s meeting. Oral comments will be limited to two minutes for each speaker. The Council also has invited about 20 representatives of major property holders, long-time business owners and organizations involved in the downtown to speak for five minutes each.
The meeting will be broadcast on cable television Channel 17 (SLCTV).
The meeting is the second of two public meetings to gather public comment on how the future of Main Street and downtown should be shaped for the next 10 to 20 years. Earlier this year the City Council determined that it should focus on the future of Main Street and downtown because the economic and social viability of Main Street and downtown are key to Salt Lake City’s future. The Council’s goals in focusing on Main Street and downtown include:
The Council held its first meeting to address the future of Main Street and downtown on March 19. Representatives of The Downtown Alliance, the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency, the City’s Community and Economic Development Department and City Council staff made presentations. After the April 25 meeting the City Council staff will prepare policy options for the City Council to discuss. That discussion is tentatively scheduled for May. However, the City Council has yet to set a specific date for the May discussion.
