Søren recently received the American Institute of Architects Young Architect Award, citing his contributions in public policy, urban design and regional planning. This national award is given annually in to recognize the exemplary accomplishments of architects during their first ten years of licensure. Søren was also recognized as the 2005 Young Architect Award for the AIA Western Mountain Region, and is a two-time Best of State Gold Medalist for City Planning as well as Gold Medalist for an Appointed Planning Official for his service on the Salt Lake Historic Landmarks Commission. Søren is active personally and professionally in his community. Prior to his service on the Council, he served on advisory boards for the Utah Arts Festival, Center for Documentary Arts, and Parley’s Regional Trail Coalition, as well as the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee, and the Salt Lake Historic Landmarks Commission. He has served in various national and local leadership positions with the American Institute of Architects, American Planning Association, the U.S. Green Building Council, and the Urban Land Institute. He also volunteers at local elementary schools near his home and office where he helps with literacy programs and tutoring. Søren is married to Heather Wayment, an author and writer, and has two children, Halle and Christian. He enjoys cooking, photography, and outdoor recreation.
