People's Portable Garden Kick Off, Saturday, May 16, 2009

The People’s Portable Garden's kick off was held Saturday, May 16, 2009, with an all-day “Garden Raising.”

The Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City (RDA) and Wasatch Community Gardens have collaborated in the development of a community garden concept that temporarily transforms a vacant lot into a community space while the land awaits development. This project, entitled the People’s Portable Garden, will be built on RDA property located at 877 South 200 West, and will be operated by Wasatch Community Gardens.

The RDA seeks to stimulate growth and revitalize various areas of Salt Lake City through the development of underutilized property. The RDA has made available the 0.2 acre site for use as a temporary community garden while it prepares to redevelop the site. The garden will be located in the RDA’s West Temple Gateway Project Area and is adjacent to the 900 South TRAX Station. RDA Executive Director, D.J. Baxter states, “This property provides the perfect opportunity for a temporary use such as a portable community garden. The RDA has recognized the potential of this property to enhance the neighborhood by providing a healthy and productive community space.”
