May 2, 2009 Salt Lake City Bike Summit

On Saturday, May 2, 2009, Salt Lake City held the City’s first Bike Summit at the Main Library. 210 East 400 South, Salt Lake City, Utah from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  The public’s involvement was a key component in reaching the goals of the summit to:   increase the number of bike advocates in the City, gather information through intelligent discussion to help guide City policy, and enhance the overall public enthusiasm and awareness about cycling. Participation from community members and bike advocates on how to make Salt Lake City a great city for bicyclists proved to be invaluable.

The summit featured keynote speaker Gary Sjoquist, who is the Advocacy Director for Quality Bicycle Products (QBP), the nation's largest distributor of bicycle parts and accessories. Gary is also the Director of Government Relations for Bikes Belong, an industry organization he helped establish in 1998.  He was the bicycle industry's first fulltime advocate, is a former IMBA state representative, and received the "Advocate of the Year" award in 2002 from Bicycle Retailer and Industry News for his work with both QBP and Bikes Belong.

Workshop topics of discussion included:  Bicycle Infrastructure, Education, Enforcement and Economic Development. Council Member Garrott said, “I am tremendously excited to be a part of this event which will help Salt Lake City move ever closer to becoming a paradise for bikes.  I welcome all comers to participate in pedaling the City forward on two wheels!  We look forward to building off this summit for future bike summit events."
