March 24, 2009 Council Meeting

Salt Lake City Council Members and Mayor Ralph Becker congratulate the West High School 4A Basketball State Champions.

"Tonight, we welcome the State 4a High School Championship West High School Boys Basketball Team, Coaches, and Principal to the City Council Meeting. The Panthers defeated Provo High School, who had a 40 game winning streak and a perfect season coming into the championship game. Although the game was close, the final score was 56-44, with the Panthers shooting 95.8% at the line – making 23 of 24 attempts. Many students, parents, administration, faculty, staff, and alumni, including Carlton Christensen – District One, attended the game. In addition, the West High and Salt Lake City communities came to cheer for you during the championship game.

As City Leaders, we don’t often take the time to celebrate the various school successes that take place in our community, nor the people who work so hard to make success happen. As members of the community, we do notice and tonight we want to take a minute to say thank you to those who continually contribute to the development, strength, and excitement of our City. We value education; our schools, public and private; and we understand the importance of an educated workforce. Although our responsibilities do not include educational oversight, as leaders we do understand the need to support and treasure our City schools and those who make them strong. Like members of the championship team here tonight, there are many who work hard every single day to reach their goals.

West High School, we appreciate the many years of effort and hard work it took for you, your coaches, and yes, even your parents to be in the championship game. Your championship title, like the other outstanding athletic achievements enjoyed by our City this year, ignites and excites the community we serve.

Congratulations – may this be one of many successes you will enjoy!"

West High team members, head coach Bob Lyman, and Principal Margery Parker are recognized
by the City and the community.

An applause of appreciation and congratulations is received by the team.
