City Appoints New Housing and Development Director

SALT LAKE CITY – Mayor Ralph Becker and Community and Economic Development Director Eric Shaw are pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Akerlow as the new Salt Lake City Director of Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND).

Akerlow moves into the directorship after serving as the deputy director of the division, which oversees a wide variety of programs that enhance the quality of life, affordability and sustainability of Salt Lake City’s diverse neighborhoods.

“Mike has proven his expertise in both his previous role in our HAND division and a career steeped in development and housing issues,” said Mayor Becker. “He brings a great body of knowledge and experience to this leadership position.”

Akerlow has managed the City’s Business Revolving Loan Fund and assisted in managing partnerships in federal programs like CDBG, ESG, HOME and HOPWA. He also oversaw the Capital Asset Management and Capital Improvements programs committed to revitalizing, strengthening and supporting Salt Lake City communities.

Before joining the City, Akerlow was involved in real estate development, specializing in infill and mixed-use projects. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Utah and a Master of Science in real estate development from Columbia University. In his time away from work, Akerlow enjoys good food, reading and spending time with his family and friends.
