About Us

The Historic Landmark Commission (HLC) reviews all applications for landmark sites, demolition and new construction within locally-designated historic districts. They do not review interior work or exterior paint color, only exterior alterations. The majority of the projects presented to the HLC are either approved as submitted or with modifications.

Finding a Contractor

Hiring a skilled contractor is the essential step in any construction project.

Before hiring a contractor and paying any money, make sure you've checked the following:

  • References that the contractor has provided. If you are still searching for a contractor, ask for recommendations from friends, neighbors, owners of buildings similar in style to yours, and owners who have undertaken projects similar to that you plan to undertake.
Roof
  • The contractor's license. Utah state law requires all contractors and subcontractors doing work in the state to be licensed by the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing under the Utah Department of Commerce.
  • Whether the contractor obtained the necessary building permits, including a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Planning staff.
  • Whether the contractor, subcontractors and suppliers have signed lien releases.

You may also find the following resources useful as you decide on a contractor.
