A key component of the Wasatch Front Watershed Education Program will be geared specifically for 4th and 9th grade students. This effort will dovetail with the existing core curriculum that focuses on teaching students about water.
The development of this program has included involvement from the Utah State Office of Education, the five Salt Lake Valley school district science specialists, plus teachers from each participating school district.
The program will teach students the following:
- What a watershed is and where their drinking water comes from.
- Why it is important to preserve and protect the Wasatch Front's watershed.
- What students and their families can do to help in this effort.
The program will include a teacher kit with as many as 15 student activities, many of which will be hands-on, involving as many senses as possible, all designed to make it easy for teachers to present the information to their classes.
Pilot tested during the 2003-2004 school year, the program will be implemented in the fall of 2004. The overall objective of the effort is to reach students as a key audience that can have great influence regarding the watershed now and in the future.
