Salt Lake City Golf Course Overviews
Bonneville is the second-oldest course in the
municipal system. It is renowned for its
awe-inspiring sunsets and view of the city from its
perch on the East Bench of Salt Lake City. It's
just a 5-iron from the University of Utah and a sand
wedge from the internationally famous Hogle Zoo.
Bonneville is home to the annual Salt Lake City Amateur and
Salt Lake City Open tournaments. Bonneville remains one of the most popular
18-hole
courses in Utah and is renowned for its hilly terrain
and challenging greens.
Forest Dale is a venerable 9-hole course that was
originally built by the Salt Lake Country Club in
1906. Forest Dale was acquired by Salt Lake City
in 1935 and was renovated in 1987. Its combination
of classic design and contemporary challenges, including
a large lake that comes into play on the 7th, 8th, and
9th holes, has made it a popular course for golfers of
all generations and abilities.
Glendale Golf Course is renowned for its large,
well-manicured greens and wide fairways. It's also
famous for its practice facilities - an expansive
driving range, two large practice putting and chipping
greens, and practice bunkers. Three lakes and the
Jordan River add intrigue to several holes for long
hitters who fail to hit it straight. One of the
most awe-inspiring views of the State Capitol Building
and downtown Salt Lake City skyline is seen looking from
the ninth green Northeast toward the city skyline.
The Jordan River golf course is a challenging
executive par 3 course that measures 1,215 yards from
the back tees. Plenty
of established trees shape the course giving each hole
its own unique personality.
This is a pleasant walking course that meanders
and winds along the banks of the Jordan River.
This course is great for beginners or anyone who
is looking to improve the finesse aspects of their game.
Lessons, club rentals, and pull carts are
available.
Two 18-hole golf courses, the Mountain Dell Lake and
Canyon courses, are situated in the mountains 12 miles east of
downtown Salt Lake City at an altitude of 6,000 feet
above sea level. These courses offer 36 holes of breathtaking views and
frequent glimpses of wildlife such as moose, deer, elk,
eagles, hawks, badgers, squirrels and an occasional cougar
(please don't feed the animals). The Canyon Course
stretches up the eastern mountain from the clubhouse
approximately four miles before looping back, so motorized
golf carts are recommended.
When the original 18-hole layout at Mountain Dell was
expanded and a 36-hole facility opened in 1991, the Lake
Course incorporated the majority of the new holes
sculpted out of the Wasatch Mountains by renowned
golf-course architect William H. Neff and PGA Tour
consultant Mike Reid. The Lake Course at Mountain
Dell features narrow, rolling fairways and dramatic tee
shots over deep ravines and water which place a premium
on precision and accuracy. Using the natural
terrain, many holes on the Lake Course are carved out of
the scrub oak and native bushes while providing
breathtaking views and strategic challenges.
Nibley Park Golf Course is the oldest
public golf course in Utah. Its central location has made
it a popular destination for city dwellers and tourists,
offering breathtaking views of the Wasatch Mountains to
the east and the Oquirrh Mountains to the West.
Although a nine-hole layout, Nibley Park has often been
called Winged Foot West in reference to its variety of
holes and table-top greens. Fairways and greens are
well-guarded by trees, many of which were planted before
the early Pioneers arrived in Salt Lake City.
Rose Park is a challenging, yet golfer-friendly
community golf course. The signature flower bed of roses
behind the 10th tee and the picturesque views
of the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountains draw locals and
tourists to Rose Park. Home of the annual Rose Park
Open golf tournament, Rose Park is the only Salt Lake City
course that offers a par-3 as an opening hole.
Widely renowned for annually presenting some of the
best-maintained golf greens in the state, the 10 dogleg holes and a series of challenging par-4s have made
this a favorite tournament course. The back nine begins
and ends with a challenging par-5. Watch for a vast
variety of waterfowl at Rose Park Golf Course. Ducks,
geese and other feathered friends often swoop in to spend
the day of the banks of the Jordan River and adjacent
wetlands.
Imagine transporting parcels of the Old Course at St.
Andrews and pieces of Muirfield and Turnberry in
Scotland to Utah to create a links-style golf course
near the shores of the Great Salt Lake, the largest
inland saltwater sea in the world. That is what renowned
golf-course architect Arthur Hills, seemingly
accomplished when he created Wingpointe Golf Course
adjacent to the Salt Lake City International Airport.
Wingpointe is one of the most
difficult courses around. In fact, it was rated
top three in Golf Digest for being the toughest
City maintained courses in the United States last
year. A lot of players come from all over the US
to play this course. Located right next to the airport,
it attracts a lot of out of state visitors.
Wingpointe is renowned among Salt Lake City courses
for its large pro shop and practice facilities. Its
driving range is one of the city's busiest, and largest,
and features carefully measured flagsticks to provide
targets for those sharpening their ball-striking and
distance-control skills. Because of its lowland location
near the S.L. Airport, Wingpointe is open 10-11 months
of the year.
