Great businesses are built from great ideas and practical skills. Look to a number of the resources provided in the Small Business Guide for mentoring programs that can guide you through the development of a business specific to your skills and talents. Many of these services are provided without charge and can put you in touch with other entrepreneurs, lenders, and other resources.

How can I get help from the city if I’m a new business?

The city has numerous resources to assist you as a new business owner. Why should I open a business in Salt Lake City?

Salt Lake City is the cultural, economic, and population center of the Wasatch Front. The vibrancy of our downtown and neighborhood business districts matched with a transportation system unique among cities of comparable size make Salt Lake City ideal for small business. Our population is large enough to supply the employees and patrons necessary to make your business possible. Salt Lake City is also the center of the business support community.

What do I need to do to apply for a business license with Salt Lake City, the State of Utah, and Salt Lake County?

To apply for a general* City business license you must submit:

To register your business with the State of Utah, visit their OneStop site to register your business with the Utah State Tax Commission, the Utah Labor Commission, the Utah Department of Commerce, the Utah Department of Workforce Services and the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.

All businesses operating in Salt Lake City must also receive a license from Salt Lake County. For information regarding a license from the county please visit their Business Licensing office.

*Some businesses (vending, sexually-oriented, beer and liquor distribution) require additional licenses.

What do I need to do to apply for a Salt Lake City building permit?

Almost any work that is being performed on any property located within Salt Lake City needs to obtain a building, plumbing, electrical or mechanical permit. I have my own business and I’m the only employee. Are there different business rules for me?

Only certain types of businesses in Salt Lake City are allowed to be home operated. These businesses must apply for a specific type of license and adhere to specific regulations regarding location, residency, etc. Please see information on the city’s Business Licensing site for further details regarding these types of small businesses.

I want to serve/prepare food at my business. How do I get a permit to do that?

A business plan outlines the goals, description, financing, marketing, and management specifications; it is a blueprint of what you want your business to be.
