Expedited Plan Review for Green Buildings

Our goal is to promote the health, safety, morals, convenience, order, prosperity and welfare of the present and future inhabitants of Salt Lake City, to implement the adopted plans of the City, and to carry out the purposes of the Municipal Land Use Development and Management Act.  In addition, intended to: lessen congestion in the streets or roads; Secure safety from fire and other dangers; provide adequate light and air; classify land uses and distribute land development and utilization; protect the tax base; secure economy in governmental expenditures; foster the City's industrial, business and residential development; and Protect the environment.

The purpose of building permits is provide minimum requirements to safeguard the public safety, health and general welfare and safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the built environment.

To aid the general public and all others in issues that pertain to the zoning of a parcel of land in Salt Lake City and what can be done on the property and the approvals, permits and inspections necessary to carry out the designs and issues for that parcel of land.

Our division is made up of three sections: Building Code Review, Zoning Review and Inspections. The Building Code and Zoning review sections review plans to conform to the Salt Lake City Zoning ordinance and the International Code Council, with state amendments.  The final section is the Inspection Division.  This division inspects all on-going projects in the city, inspects business license applications and makes fire and life-safety inspections on buildings that have been damaged by fire or accidents.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

We will be designating a specific group of buildings and or structures in Salt Lake City as "Essential Facilities." Included in this group are all Group I-2 Occupancies with two or more operating rooms built in the future in Salt Lake City.  As identified in the 2006 International Building Code (IBC), essential facilities are defined in Section 1602 as:

"Buildings and other structures that are intended to remain

operational in the event of extreme environmental loading

from flood, wind, snow or earthquakes." (Emphasis added)

This requirement will be identified on the City's website in various locations and included in all checklists for plan review and DRT.  Any questions regarding this directive should be addressed to Orion Goff, Salt Lake City Building Official.
