The Historic Landmark
Commission (HLC) reviews all
applications for landmark sites, demolition
and new construction within
locally-designated historic districts.
They do not review
interior work or exterior paint
color, only exterior
alterations. The majority
of the projects presented
to the HLC are either
approved as submitted or
with modifications.

Signs
|
Any new sign and any change in the appearance of any existing sign in a historic district or landmark site requires approval from the Historic Landmark Commission. Signs must also meet the base requirements for any sign in the city. Signs must be consistent with the architectural and historic character of the building and neighborhood.
- Backlit plastic panel signs and backlit awnings are not appropriate sign types.
- Signs based upon the historic appearance of a building are encouraged. See our resources section for assistance on locating historic photographs of your building.
- The City zoning ordinance allows the Board of Adjustment to grant exceptions to preserve existing historic signs that do not conform to the current sign ordinance.

Applicants who need approval of their signage must complete the approval form
and be heard by the full Historic Landmark Commission.
Most signs that meet the Commission's standards receive administrative approval. Consult the Design Guidelines and Sections 21A.34.020.G(11) and 21A.46 of the Salt Lake City Zoning Ordinance for the standards the Historic Landmark Commission uses in evaluating sign projects, or contact the
Planning staff for further information.
