About Us

The Historic Landmark Commission (HLC) reviews all applications for landmark sites, demolition and new construction within locally-designated historic districts. They do not review interior work or exterior paint color, only exterior alterations. The majority of the projects presented to the HLC are either approved as submitted or with modifications.

Locally Designated Historic Districts

Historic districts can be listed on the National Register of Historic Places or locally designated. Individual buildings or sites can be listed on the National Register or listed locally on the Salt Lake City Register of Cultural Resources as "landmark sites" .

The Historic Landmark Commission (HLC) is governed by Section 21.34.010 of the Salt Lake City Zoning Ordinance and reviews all exterior alterations, demolitions and new construction in locally-designated districts and landmark sites, through the provisions of the H Historic Overlay Zone of the Salt Lake City Zoning Ordinance (Section 21A.34.020). The HLC does not review construction work affecting buildings and sites that are included in districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places and/or listed individually on the National Register, unless the properties are also locally-designated. All of the locally-designated districts in Salt Lake City are listed on the National Register, but not all National Register districts are locally-designated.

Salt Lake City has six historic districts. Click on a shaded historic district on the map below to find out more about specific design guidelines for that area.
