About Us

The Historic Landmark Commission (HLC) reviews all applications for landmark sites, demolition and new construction within locally-designated historic districts. They do not review interior work or exterior paint color, only exterior alterations. The majority of the projects presented to the HLC are either approved as submitted or with modifications.

Getting on the Meeting Agenda

Applicants must submit an application form to the Planning staff in the Planning Division's offices in Room 406 of the City and County Building (451 S. State). The application is simple to complete.

Plans, elevations, photographs and other information must be submitted in order for the application to be considered complete. In some instances, proposed projects must be reviewed by other City employees before they can be placed on an agenda.

Band

The Planning staff must notify surrounding property owners 15 days before an HLC meeting. For this reason, applicants must submit their application form and materials 21 days prior to an HLC meeting in order to provide the Planning staff with sufficient time to review the application and meet notification deadlines.

The Planning staff will prepare a staff report for the HLC members. Staff reports provide the background, history and purpose of each project and detail the presented plans. The staff report provides an analysis of the proposed project and states whether the project is or is not consistent with the Historic Preservation Overlay ordinance. The staff concludes the report with a recommendation to the HLC. The Commission accepts, rejects, or approves with conditions to the proposal.

The HLC meets the first Wednesday of every month.  Meetings begin at 4:00 p.m., and are held in the City and County Building at 451 S. State.

Contact the Planning staff to verify room numbers and agenda items.
