About Us

The Historic Landmark Commission (HLC) reviews all applications for landmark sites, demolition and new construction within locally-designated historic districts. They do not review interior work or exterior paint color, only exterior alterations. The majority of the projects presented to the HLC are either approved as submitted or with modifications.

Commission Members

The Historic Landmark Commission (HLC) is a board of volunteers whose purpose is to preserve buildings and sites of historic and architectural significance in Salt Lake City. Their review authority extends to properties and street features within neighborhoods designated as historic districts by the Salt Lake City Council, and to historic buildings and sites designated as individual landmarks by the City Council. These landmarks are included on a list referred to as the Salt Lake Register of Cultural Resources.

About us

Commission members are appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the City Council. All HLC members must be residents of Salt Lake City. The Salt Lake City zoning ordinance requires that HLC members represent specific geographic, professional and neighborhood interests.

If you would like to contact an HLC member, call the Planning Staff and we will forward your message to an HLC member.

Interested in serving on the HLC? The Historic Landmark Commission can have up to fifteen members, but can have no fewer than nine members. We are always looking to fill vacancies and to keep potential members "in the pipeline." If you are interested, please contact Diana Karrenberg of the Mayor's Office at 535-7931.
