Historic Landmarks Commission

The Historic Landmark Commission conducts design reviews of new construction or alterations to properties located on one of Salt Lake City’s six historic districts and landmark sites. Any demolition within a historic district must be approved by this board. The Commission is also charged with promoting, nominating, and monitoring the preservation of historically significant resources with the boundaries of the City.

Powers and duties

  1. Encourage proper development and maintenance of historic structures and districts
  2. Promote public awareness of historic preservation
  3. Conduct studies of significant historic elements
  4. Review demolition and alteration requests within historic districts
  5. Recommend boundaries for Historic Districts to planning commission
  6. When requested, make recommendations on conditional uses within historic districts
  7. Make recommendations on master plans and possible ordinance revisions to Planning Commission, City Council, and Mayor’s Office

Member qualifications

Nine to Fifteen members, appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council, serve on the Historic Landmarks Commission. Each member serves a three-year term. The Commission consists of citizens interested in historic preservation, including design professionals and representatives of historic preservation groups. At least one licensed architect from the American Institute of Architects, a member of the Utah State Historical Society, a member of the Utah Heritage Foundation, and a resident of each of the City’s Historic Districts must be represented on the board.
