Board of Adjustment

The Salt Lake City Board of Adjustment hears and rules on written appeals from administrative decisions regarding the City’s zoning ordinance. The board also reviews all applications for variances and special exceptions.

Powers and duties

  1. Hear and decide appeals from any administrative decisions made by zoning
    administrators or enforcement officers
  2. Authorize variances as allowed by law
  3. Authorize special exceptions as allowed by law
  4. Make determinations regarding the existence, expansion, or modification of
    nonconforming uses and non complying structures.

Member qualifications

The Board of Adjustment consists of five members, appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. Each member serves a five year term, and may be reappointed to serve up to two full terms. The Mayor and City Council seek membership that provides balanced representation in terms of geographic, professional, neighborhood and community interests. A limited number of alternate members may also be appointed to the board.
