Board of Appeals and Examiners

The Salt Lake City Board of Appeals and Examiners is housed in the Department of Community and Economic Development, Building Services and Licenses Division. The Board directs matters concerning building construction, housing and abatement codes and interprets the technical regulations.

Powers and duties

The board listens and resolves appeals that may contain errors regarding recruitment, resolutions and purpose made by an administrative official. The board may also recommend and advocate new ordinances to the City Council as appropriate.

Member qualifications

Five members, with one LEED accredited professional, hold office for five years on the Board of Appeals and Examiners. The members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. The chairman and vice chair for the board are elected by the members each year. Members with experience and enthusiasm for matters pertaining to building construction and housing are preferred.
